about the artist
Judi Lewis’ diverse art practice ranges from mixed media abstract paintings through to large-scale realism drawings inspired by forms found in the natural world.
Founded by her faith, she aspires to capture a brief glimpse of nature, to arrest a moment to reflect on the beauty, detail and diversity that exists in creation. This moment of reflection proposes an important reminder of the universal context in which we all live, the relief that there is something greater than ourselves. In this perfect gift which we have been freely given, humanity is held, intimately, as one beautifully beloved whole.
Judi gained a Diploma of Fine Arts from Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design (1988) in New Zealand, awarded top prize for excellence, before commencing her career in graphic design. Abandoning the rigidity of this vocation, she transitioned into advertising, continuing to explore fine arts. In 2007 she settled in Australia where she has exhibited in several collective art shows in Sydney, NSW. Her works are held in both Australia and New Zealand.
Most recently she has explored the subject of birds in pastel and graphite drawing mediums on paper, from exotic species in large-scale form to local native species life size studies. Birds offer a compelling representation of nature’s diversity . By employing a large-scale format as a mechanism to command attention, these works are an invitation to be present to something outside and beyond oneself. The opportunity to reflect on each creature, subject to subject, revealing an inherent dignity and offering a deeper and wider field of perception and knowing. Her practice of utilising simple, accessible and delicate materials is purposeful, the medium becoming the message. Creation is here now, complex, fragile, precious and fleeting. Behold and beheld.

All shall be well,
and all manner of things shall be well,
for there is a force of Love
moving through the universe that holds us fast
and will never let us go.
